Story of how Best Mexico Movers began

My wife, Jet, had conflicted emotions.

We were living in Mexico, but our household goods were in a self-storage unit in Arizona.

On the one hand, Jet was excited and desperately wanted to be reunited with her beloved possessions she had spent a lifetime gathering, each piece with its own unique value.

"They’re part of me, and they’re part of what makes wherever we live feel like home. I remember searching for and buying each unique piece or getting it as a treasured gift. I can tell you why I bought each item, how we used it, and the happy events we shared with them. There’s a hole in my heart until I get them back."

But on the other hand, there was the worry about how it would be done. Eagerly but with some trepidation, Jet started contacting several moving companies right away.

But it was several weeks before she showed me any of their quotes.

The reason she waited was that she was a little afraid that when I saw the cost, I might say “no.”

The problem with conventional moving companies to Mexico

The quotes were nothing less than shocking. Not only was the cost way more than I had anticipated, but the process came with a lot of work for us to do, along with dire warnings from the moving companies that if we made even one mistake, horrible things could happen, and it would all be our fault.

We were given lots of paperwork with confusing directions, outdated and irrelevant information, and sometimes even contradictory instructions, oral and written. Many times, I had difficulty getting calls returned. One website was so old it had services on it that weren’t even offered by that moving company any longer.

Jet and I were frustrated and we felt alone.

It seemed like the moving companies had designed their offerings not for us, but to protect themselves, give lots of tasks and risks to us, and, adding insult to injury, charge the maximum amount.

There had to be a better way, so I set out to find it.

I had two objectives:

  1. Deliver to my wife’s loving care and protection the household goods she longed for to begin the new phase in our lives here in Mexico.
  2. As a result, maybe develop a better way to move household goods to Mexico. If we did that, perhaps we could offer this better way to others who were going through the same frustration, anxiety, confusion and risk we were experiencing, and as a result, help others have a better experience.

In the end, both came true.

Our year of investigation and research

We spent almost a year investigating, during which we talked with dozens and dozens of industry experts, including those from trucking and ocean transportation companies, freight forwarders, customs brokers, insurance companies, and packers and loaders. We also interviewed past customers of existing international moving companies and those who tried some version of moving their items themselves because they were so unhappy with what was offered by the traditional moving companies.

Not only were we eventually able to figure out how things worked, but we identified old, inefficient, overly complex and very costly components in the existing process that could be replaced with better, modern, simpler and less costly solutions. By breaking the process into components and reconstructing it, we could create the kind of moving experience we wanted for our own move.

The Results

Jet reunited with her household goods, with Chuck celebrating behind her

The result was twofold:

  • my wife was reunited with her cherished belongings in an efficient, low-stress, cost-effective way; and
  • we were able to form Best Mexico Movers to apply our new process to our new company’s clients.
